How ChatGPT decides which brands to name, and how to track it.

How does ChatGPT build an answer?
- Without a search, ChatGPT answers from what its model learned in training. Brands that appear often on pages it learned from are the ones it reaches for.
- With ChatGPT search, it fetches current pages and lists them as sources. OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, decides which sites can appear there.
- The answer is rewritten every time, so the same question can name different brands from one run to the next.

- It cited tesla.com 12 times in 93 citations. The other three engines together cited it 5 times in 915.
- Asked which EV has the best fast-charging network for road trips, it opened: “Tesla is the best choice for cross-country EV road trips in the U.S.”
